Can a long
distance relationship really work?
By using
Internet
dating sites
you can’t always guarantee
that you are going to fall for somebody who
lives a short walk or even a short drive
away. Often you will meet people who live
thousands of miles away, even the other side
of the world but part of being in a
relationship is the close intimacy you have
with your partner so starting a long
distance relationship is something you are
probably better off avoiding as far as
possible. Once it’s started it will become
very difficult to stop. There are many
different things you need to take into
consideration if you are in or are thinking
about getting into a long distance
relationship.
Time for travel.
A long distance
relationship can be fun during the
occasional times you get to meet but if you
live in different countries and you both
have busy working schedules then what are
the chances these meetings are going to
occur on a regular enough basis? You should
determine whether you both have the time to
travel and when these times will be. If
you’re only going to see one another during
major holidays that’s a lot of phone calls
and secret emails from work. Many couples
find that one or both partners need to work
away from home during the week but return
most weekends. This is still a long distance
relationship but these can work out
perfectly well because the time between
seeing each other is relatively small and
only acts to increase the longing.

The means to
travel.
If your
potential partner is only a couple of
hundred miles away and you both have cars or
access to regular public transport then
there isn’t likely to be a problem. You can
spend weekends together as well as holidays
but if you are in different countries with
no way of getting to one another apart from
flying or sailing this can become very
costly indeed. While it doesn’t sound very
romantic you need to consider whether you
have the money to make your long distance
relationship work.
If you can avoid
starting a long distance relationship it is
probably for the best. Most dating sites
give you ample opportunity to discover where
a person lives before you even make contact
or indeed read their profile. If someone
contacts you through your online ad then you
should try to find out where they live; of
course if they regularly travel to your
hometown anyway it might not be a problem. A
long distance relationship requires a lot of
trust and love to work, something that is
difficult to achieve in
any new relationship no matter how
intense it may seem.
