Using Instant
Messenger to further your
matchmaking online.
The Internet has
come on in leaps and bounds in the last few
years and where emails were the only method
of contact through the Internet there is now
the Instant Messenger. Many people are quite
scared of using the IM to communicate with
their new found online friends because it’s
real time with little chance for thinking
about your answers, however, it can be one
of the best tools available to you when
trying to improve your matchmaking online.
Keep it
relatively brief.
That doesn’t
mean you should just fly straight in with a
first in depth message that portrays all of
your heart felt feelings; something like
“Hi”. As ever first impressions last and you
should take this opportunity to gather your
thoughts and think about what exactly you
are going to write.
Use what you’ve
already got.
Any information you have
already got will come in handy for this
first message, so look back at the personal
ad or the response to your personal ad to
try and gleam some information about their
interests. It can be anything but the fact
that you’ve taken notice will impress them
and it will give the conversation a strong
and fluent start

Make sure that
you keep your first message relatively
simple but still make sure it has a little
in the way of content. Find something of
their ad or their response and use that.
Always end with a question. This is very
important because it instantly opens a two
way dialogue and you will ore often than not
get a response to your question; if you are
really lucky there will be a question at the
end of the response so you can carry this
on. Perhaps something mentioning their work
or one of their hobbies and asking if they
want to talk about it.
A lot of your
response work is the same as if you were
answering by email except once you start the
conversation you won’t get as long to answer
questions. In this manner you should keep
your tone conversational and friendly and
try to introduce a little humour. You’re
best staying away from sarcasm for now, as
even friendly banter can lead to a
disagreement that can be difficult or
impossible to resolve. Matchmaking online is
similar to that in real life, you should pay
a compliment but not too many so as to make
them cringe. Everyone likes a compliment but
too many really is over the top.
